Maison Plantevin Cotes du Rhone

John enjoyed this – we had it at Dinner with Robbie in La Maison, if a little overpriced @ €40.

Pure, unoaked red from the Rhône Valley. Made with Grenache, Syrah and dash of Carignan

Tasty, fruity but nice and Dry, light – medium bodied. Pure, unoaked red from the Rhône Valley. Made with Grenache, Syrah and dash of Carignan and Cinsault, this gives unbeatable, smooth fruit flavours. Natural fermentation and low sulphur. Strong @ 14.5%. Plantevin now own a total of 40ha of vineyards focusing primarily on both Syrah and Grenache. Starting from humble beginnings in his father’s shed back in 2007, Laurent Plantevin now vinifies his hand-harvested grapes in a new purpose-built winery. Their wines are blended to express the specific terroir of each individual vineyard plot.

Gargantua Cotes du Rhone 2011 L’Union des Vignerons des Cotes du Rhone

20130927-225021.jpgGargantua. Quite. I risked this in Dunnes, the hungry cherub Giant is a nice touch but they say never to judge a book by its cover which in this case I should have. Not all bad but quite a raw blunt delivery of alcohol, I felt.

L’Union des Vignerons des Cotes du Rhone is a brand of Cellier des Dauphins, a co-op of 13 producers. Maybe they didn’t want to put their name to this rough and ready product. Disappointing because I quite liked their Cru des Cotes du Rhone offering.

A stated blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault

Chateau Millegrand 2011 Minervois Languedoc

Millegrand F (Custom)

€11 in Dunnes. This wine is always reliable & enjoyable.

A blend of 30% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 30% Carignan and 10% Mourvedre according to the label.

Opaque in the glass – almost squid Ink coloured. Oak aged, good legs, vanilla nose with lots of fruit and lovely aftertaste.

You can read more about the Chateau Millegrand which used to be part of the Bishop of Carcassonne’s Estate, here. and is part of the BonFils “empire”.

Ortas Cotes du Rhone 2011 Reserve

Ortas CduR 2011 F (Custom)
I’m not qute sure what to say about this; it looks the part but was just ok.

Fruity and dry, a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 10% Carignan

Produced by Cave de Rasteau who are trying to convert their member winemakers to sustainable & organic viniculture.

An O’Briens exclusive.

Gran Sangre de Toro Reserva 2009. Miguel Torres. Catalunya

Gran Sangre de Toro 1 (Custom)

I am a big fan of Miguel Torres and his wines and regularly buy Vina Sol and the Coronas table wines.

His Chilean Santa Digna offerings are pretty good too.

So I was a bit disappointed with this Reserva which I found in Dunnes and served at a dinner party.

Deep berry colour, fruity with a slight hint of spice but just didn’t have the complexity going the extra distance for a grand reserve.

60% Grenache with 25% Carignan (Mazuelo) and 15% Syrah

Dunnes: on offer at €12:20

2nd bottle served showed signs of slight oxidation so perhaps it’s approaching / passing its drink by.

Palais Saint Vigni Chateauneuf du Pape 2011

Saint Vigni Chateauneuf du Pape (Small)

A very refined Chateauneuf du Pape from Jean Claude Fromont and this looks like a Tesco exclusive.

Slightly rusty colour in the glass, nice nose – hints of Chocolate.

Soft mouthfeel with good fruit complimenting the Lamb Chops.

A lovely blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan.

The new mansion of the Pope is an under-rated style of wine.
