Bardolino, 2015, Allegrini, Villa Maria, Riesling, 2015

A night on the tiles in Nottingham: Cocktail Aperitifs in the BoilerMaker followed by a BYOB meal at U.Canteen in the excellent company of Tony and Olivia

The Bardolino was light and went well with the spicy food. Slightly more interesting was the Villa Maria Riesling which cut through the sauces.

Tussock Jumper, Riesling, Rheinhessen, 2012

This got into the cellar from one of Lesley’s girls dinner parties and I must admit to being pleasantly surprised.

Striking graphics, not at all like the austere informative German labels of old.

Light, fresh, lovely structure if a little honied but a different taste experience none the less.

The ‘Red Jumper’ deserves more research.

Hugel, Riesling, 2012

Hugel Riesling 130114

The weather was foul on our trip from Castlemartyr to Youghal to visit Ahernes Seafood Bar in Youghal and we thought at first glance the Bar might be closed. Fortunately for us, not and we were well looked after by the friendly Hostess..

This noble underestimated Riesling from Hans Hugel’s vineyard perfectly complimented the amazing scallops and fresh off the boat Monkfish Scampi.

Bone dry, characteristic floral nose, lively fruit. A perfect finish in dry, warm and comfortable surroundings to a nice weekend in East Cork. Worth a long detour in any weather.
